Cottage Pie

Did you know?

You can add just about any vegetable to the mixture or try spicing it up with Worcestershire sauce or Tabasco. You could also mix the potatoes with mashed turnip or parsnip. Substitute soya products for the milk and butter to make this dish lactose free.

Serves 12


  • 3kg potatoes, peeled, roughly chopped
  • 180ml milk
  • 60g butter
  • 3 large onions, chopped
  • 3 carrots, finely chopped
  • 1 courgette, finely chopped
  • 6 cloves of garlic, pealed and finely chopped
  • 1.35kg minced beef or lamb
  • 6 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 450ml stock
  • 6 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
  • 1/2 - 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper


  1. Preheat the oven to 190C/Gas Mark 5
  2. Boil the potatoes for 15-20 mins (until soft), mix and mash with butter, milk and a pinch of salt
  3. Gently fry onion, carrot and courgette for 10 mins
  4. Add minced beef or lamb and brown
  5. Add stock, tomato puree, salt and pepper, thyme and parsley and simmer until the liquid reduces
  6. Spread meat mixture in oven proof dish and top with mashed potato. Cook in the oven for 30 mins or until crisp and brown
