This free holiday activity programme run in partnership with City of Edinburgh Council and Edible Edinburgh aims to provide fun learning activities for children and families to share. When free school meals are not accessible during the holidays, it tackles this spike in food insecurity by providing much needed meals and teaches healthy eating and cookery skills at the same time through cooking sessions run by Edinburgh Community Food.

Summer 2020 programme

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we knew that this programme was even more important to families than ever and that we needed to be a little bit creative to deliver it to say the least! A virtual holiday activity programme has never been run before but we are always up for a challenge and so we put our heads together to work out how we could make 2020 the best year yet.  We delivered a fantastic schedule of online events running through Facebook, allowing all the families to easily access everything from their homes.  Families received a food box delivered to their door from Edinburgh Community Food every week throughout the summer holidays with equipment and supplies to take part in all the activities planned for the week ahead.  The feedback has been outstanding.

"Apart from not meeting with all the wonderful Discover staff, this is so far the best Discover experience we have had in the 18 months we have been attending. Thank you all so much for all the effort you are putting in for us to keep the children and adults motivated"

Activities include family cooking demonstration videos, Facebook live healthier baking videos, live online health talks, food play and Love Food Hate Waste Q&As from us as well as arts and crafts, storytelling, yoga, zumba, gardening, puppet shows, and dance classes provided by a variety of fabulous professionals who have been involved with Discover for many of the previous years.

Summer 2019 programme

The summer 2019 programme was run across 4 schools in Edinburgh: St David's RC Primary School, WHEC, Portobello High School and Gracemount High School. The mornings' focused on the children and P1-P7 aged youngsters took part in activities to learn about food hygiene, healthy eating and where food comes from.  Then they got hands-on and prepared a dish to take home at the end of the day.  Pitta Bread Pizzas, Mexican Breakfast Wraps, Herby Wholemeal Scones and Low-Sugar Fruit Crumble were all on the menu and the feedback was fantastic!

"This was so fun, especially cooking with my mum.  I can't wait to come back next week"

Edinburgh Community Food and the Discover! organisers recognise the importance of children learning where their food comes from and how it is made from an early age.  An understanding of what makes up a balanced diet and how to make healthy food for ourselves is an essential skill for a healthy future and we hope these hands-on experiences will foster an interest in food and inspire children to try new flavours.

Families Programme

In the afternoons the adults joined in too and the families cooked a meal together.  The parents spent quality time with their children, imparting their own cookery knowledge as well as learning something new.  Several different evening meal recipes were tried out as well as a delicious Overnight Oats breakfast recipe and Healthy Pot Noodles.  Parents had some great comments:

"I didn't realise how easy it was to make these foods"

"Cooking in a group is a great way to learn"

The programme ensures that all households were well-fed but also aims to bring families together through new experiences and spark conversations which create healthy lifestyle choices at home.

Read here about when Councillor George Gordon, Chair of Edible Edinburgh, visited one of our sessions at St David's RC Primary School to help make fresh hummus.
